IRELAND'S PRETTIEST VILLAGE? Beautiful Adare Village in County limerick is stunning, but you decide.
I’m in County Limerick today, and I just happened upon this little village, the village of Adair. This place is so photogenic it’s unbelievable. A lot of work goes into these videos as you can well see! You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers. https://www.buymeacoffee.com/NakedIre... The village sits on the main N2, a very busy road that I was travelling on between Limerick town and Tralee. And we pass a very grand entrance to Adare Manor, a 5-star luxury hotel, spa and golf course that is lavish beyond belief. The thatched cottages don’t even look Irish, they’re just too well groomed. In fact, these little cottages were part of an estate village, attached to the manor, which is why they look more like they’re plucked from a village in the English countryside. Very Arts and Craftsy. I must say it’s not the kind of architecture I expected to find on the road between Limerick and Tralee, but they’re very beautiful and so well preserved and looked after. Obviously being right on the main highway here brings in a lot of passing trade, although as I said, it’s a very busy road, with all kinds of heavy transport rushing past, so I guess it’s a double-edged sword. They get plenty of passing trade, but being on such a main artery is noisy and in many ways not ideal. One cottage bears the date 1826, that corresponds to the date of the manor house I expect, early 19th Century. It’s all very lovely, you don’t see that many thatched cottages in Ireland these days. We look at Holy Trinity Abbey Church. This church and abbey unbelievably date back to 1230 and we’re looking at the 1811 restoration. It was founded by monks from the Trinitarian Order. We’ll not go inside on this video, although I did film the interior, it’s beautiful, so perhaps I’ll do a future film on that. The church, which now serves as Adare’s Roman Catholic church, was originally the only monastery owned by the Trinitarian order in Ireland. If you’ve never heard of the Trinitarian Order before, they were founded in France and their original purpose was to rescue hostages taken during the crusades in the Holy Land. Hostages in the Holy Land… it’s funny how history repeats itself constantly. It’s thought that these Trinitarians, or The Order of Redemption of Captives as they were also known, came across to Ireland from Scotland So, Adare has, not surprisingly perhaps, been designated a Heritage Town by the Irish Government. It had no fewer that 3 monastery’s and is a market town dating back to the Middle Ages, if that doesn’t qualify it as a Heritage town then I don’t know what would. Perhaps the fact that it also is close to Desmond castle, a fortress built within celtic ringfort back in the 12th century. The castle is presently being renovated and work has been ongoing since 1996 – another future Naked Ireland film perhaps? We pass one of the old telephone boxes. You don’t see so many of these about these days for obvious reasons. This one, like others I’ve seen, is used to house a defibrillator. At the top of the street the kind of mock Tudor building y is the Adare Community Hall. Adare Park is just like everything else in the town, its immaculately kept. Not a blade of grass out of place, and a play area for the children. And, as if we haven’t had enough thatched roofs, here’s another, right in the centre of the park. What a lovely place to come and sit and read your book. In the shade of this little shrek like structure surrounded by neatly trimed box hedges. That’s the end of our tour I’ll leave you with a last view of the beautiful abbey and I’ll see you all in the next Naked Ireland video.
