Thanks to a second-half penalty from Nadiem Amiri, the only goal of the game against Omonia Nicosia, the 05ers took all three points home to Mainz on the first matchday of the league phase. While FSV Mainz struggled at times in the first half and the post prevented a potential lead, Bo Henriksen's team controlled the ball and the opposition by the second 45 minutes. The narrow victory was hard-earned, but overall deserved, as the Rhineland-Palatinate side, spurred on by 1,500 traveling fans, demonstrated a more mature style of play and improved significantly over the course of the game. Even a brief interruption due to cups being thrown at the 05 players during their celebrations after the goal deterred the Mainz players.
