Who says Mahomes is just a "Streetball" QB? | Kurt Warner's Reaction and Game Tape Breakdown

I read something last week suggesting that Patrick Mahomes is a “one-read” kind of guy...that he looks at his first guy and if he isn’t there, then he just "plays streetball". After hearing that, I watched all of his tapes since he became a starter in the NFL and I had my own feelings before hearing that quote. Still, I thought since that’s out there, let me go back and verify what this anonymous defensive coach is saying or from what I thought beforehand. I wanted to watch the Bills and Chiefs playoff game from last year, gearing up for the season because that was a great football game watching two great quarterbacks go head to head was awesome. I decided to dive into that game. We are going to look at Patrick Mahomes in that one game and we are going to take a look at the plays to see if he is a guy that is truly a “one-read” quarterback. If that number one guy is taken away, does he have good enough pocket presence to lay in there and read through his progressions beyond his number one read? Let’s take a look! There you go, one game. And in one game, you see how many times Patrick Mahomes plays the game inside the pocket. He isn't just a great talent but he is extremely good mentally with knowing what he is seeing. Understanding the structures of defenses and how that pertains to what they are doing offensively. You can make a lot of arguments, “that was his number one guy.” He only became his number one guy because he saw what was going on and that became his first choice because of what the defense is doing. That’s how you play the quarterback position. Because those quarterbacks know where the ball is going right on the snap. Doesn’t mean that is the primary guy or that’s who they thought they were going to get when they called the play. That simply means I understand what we are doing and I’m going to attack accordingly. Patrick Mahomes is one of the best in the National Football League since he took over with the Chiefs at doing that: at processing information. Playing the game and understanding how to manipulate guys and get the ball out and doing it all within the pocket. Too often, we get wowed by what he does playing “streetball”. Where he does the crazy Patrick Mahomes things that he does. That’s not what makes him great. Those are great plays, but that is not what makes him great. This is the stuff and why he has been so successful and why they just continue to win every single year in Kansas City. #patrickmahomes #NFL #kurtwarner
