Pressed flat against his neck and shoulders like something that made a decision about him personally. And the line he's planting — crooked. Not because he doesn't know better. Not because he doesn't care. But because a body can only hold so much straight before something in it starts to bend. The foreman will see it tomorrow. There will be words. There always are. But tonight — tonight he sits at the edge of that field and looks at that crooked line running through the dirt like a scar and thinks — That's me. Right there in the ground. Everything I meant to do straight and everything life made crooked running side by side all the way to the tree line. Sunburn fading on his neck. The line still crooked in the dark.
