This testimony is much more than a personal story: it is a living lesson in Cuban history. Santiago Álvarez, born in Matanzas, grew up on a farm between Las Villas and Matanzas provinces, in a family deeply committed to their country. His father, a doctor and governor in Matanzas, was part of the Generation of '30, while his grandfather fought alongside the Mambises under the command of Antonio Maceo. The tradition of struggle continued when his family confronted the regime of Gerardo Machado in defense of democracy. His grandfather and his sons joined the anti-Machado fight, paying a high price: imprisonment, persecution, and family tragedies, including the death of his mother after learning of her husband's imprisonment. The story of the Álvarez brothers is etched in the memory of Cuba, with a monument and a town named in their honor, commemorating Santiago's three uncles who were murdered. With Fidel Castro's rise to power, everything changed. The family lost their possessions and were forced into exile: first in Mexico and then in Miami, where they started over from scratch, even living on a boat, the "Alisan." That same boat would become part of history, used in operations related to the fight against the regime, including the landing of armed groups. Santiago also participated in infiltration and exfiltration missions during the time of Brigade 2506. This is a story of sacrifice, patriotism, and the struggle for freedom in Cuba.
