The Truth About Too Much Body Fat in Children

The number on the scale has been the center of too many conversations for too long. This episode shifts that. In this episode, we're talking about child obesity and body composition. More specifically, how a child's body fat level impacts child health. I sat down with Dr. Robert Dubin, triple board-certified internist, endocrinologist, and child obesity medicine physician, and Program Director for the Obesity Medicine Fellowship at Louisiana State University Health Sciences. He conducts research at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, one of the world's largest academic nutrition research centers, the same institution that helped create the DASH diet. His current research focuses on how the body changes in composition when using glp-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. We had a conversation I've been wanting to have for a while: body composition. What it is, what it actually tells us about health, and why it's a far more useful lens than weight or BMI alone. This is a topic I've been watching closely, and Dr. Dubin is one of the people shaping where it goes next. A note for parents: much of the research in this area is adult-focused, and that's reflected in our conversation. In children, body fat and body composition is always in dynamic change during growth and development, so the conversation looks different. But the foundational concepts here will help you think more clearly about child health, particularly if you have an overweight child or a child with metabolic health concerns. In this episode, we cover: What body composition is and why it matters more than total body weight The four compartments of the body and what each one tells us The body fat percentage difference between subcutaneous fat and visceral fat, and why location is everything Why some children carry extra body fat with no metabolic dysfunction, and others don't The genetic piece: how much of our body composition is predetermined How body composition is currently measured, and what's coming next What a healthy body fat percentage actually looks like Why BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis How GLP-1 medications affect body composition, including muscle loss What parents need to watch for if their child is on a GLP-1 Dr. Dubin also has a YouTube channel where he educates about diabetes, body fat, and body composition in a genuinely entertaining way.
