You want to get an x-ray done of your pregnant mom dog so that you can count how many puppies there are and know how many to expect at the time of delivery. And when you can finally go to bed. 2) Have your welping box ready. It must be big enough so the mom dog doesn’t sit on the puppies and so she can move around. 3) Have towels ready to help clean off puppies as they are born. 4) Make sure puppies cry amd start nursing after they are born. 5) Always do a once over of the puppies to make sure they are not deformed. A specific area to check is inside the roof of their mouth to look for a common abnormality called Cleft palate. If the puppy has this it may not make it because it will aspirate milk and will need veterinary attention. 6) First 3-4 weeks the puppies will drink milk from the mom dog. 7) Prepare to feed the mom dog big meals 3 x a day and give her lots of bowls of water. Feeding puppies requires a lot of energy and she needs the water to produce milk for the babies. 8) At 2 weeks old the puppies eyes will start to open. 9) Weeks 4-8 are the hardest of raising a litter of puppies because they are eating real food and they become eating and pooping machines. 10) I recomemd using news papers to change them out and keep them clean 11) It is a full time job now keeping them clean 12) First vaccines are given by the breeder at 6 weeks old. The puppies are also dewormed at this time. 13) Remember to monitor your mom dogs milk color to make sure it is creamywhite and not green or blood tinged which can be a sign of mastitis or mammary infection. 14) When the puppies are 8 weeks old they are ready for sale. They will get another set of vaccines and deworming at this time. They will need a Health Certificate issued by a local veterinarian to make them legal for sale or adoption.
