How To Grow Begonia Corms Part 2, Planting Begonia In Containers
How To Grow Begonia Corms Part 2, Planting Begonia In Containers Having patiently waited for the Begonia corms to grow, and root, they are now established enough to plant into their permanent home for the summer. Using pots 30cm diameter, 26cm internal diameter, and of similar height it means that 3 plants can be grown together to produce a better floral display throughout the summer. Tools required: Drill and suitable sized drill bit, Drainage material, Pots of suitable size, Fresh potting compost If using plastic containers then 3 or so holes will need to be made to allow for decent drainage. Use a drill and suitable size and type drill bit for this task. Fill the base of the container with 3-4 inches (10-12cm) of drainage material. For this purpose you can use gravel, broken crocks or polystyrene. Fill with fresh potting compost to a suitable height. You want to fill so that the Begonia rootball can sit on the compost and allow the top most part of the rootball to be about 1inch (3cm) below the rim of the container. Take the plants out of their pots and place the 3 plants into the container so that they are equally spaced apart. If you gently place one hand, fingers spread around the plant stems, and then tip the plant upside down. Using the other hand you can then lightly squeeze and tap the pot so that it comes free from the plant rootball. Fill around the plant roots with more compost, lightly firming to remove air pockets. Make sure that you do not cover the Begonia tubers with any compost. Finishing soil/compost height should be about 1inch (3cm) from the top rim of the pot. This gap will allow for easy watering and feeding.
