But that simple gesture turned out to be a turning point, in breaking down the stigma surrounding the illness. Now, more than 30 years later, her friend, popstar, and prominent AIDS campaigner, Elton John, has delivered a landmark lecture in her memory, celebrating the seismic progress made in treatment and attitudes towards the disease.
