Excerpts from the book “The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna”. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (1836-1886) was one of India’s most revered spiritual teachers, considered by many to be an avatar (a divine incarnation). Born Gadadhar Chattopadhyay in a village in Bengal, he grew up in a simple and deeply religious environment. From an early age, he demonstrated spiritual inclination and mystical experiences. He became a priest at the Kali temple in Dakshineswar, where he immersed himself in intense spiritual practices, exploring different paths, including Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. His search led him to the realization of divine unity, becoming a living example of religious harmony. Ramakrishna emphasized that all religions lead to the same ultimate truth and that God can be realized through love, devotion and surrender. He taught purity of heart and renunciation of ego as essential steps to enlightenment. Using simple stories and metaphors, he conveyed profound spiritual truths, emphasizing that direct experience of God is more important than doctrines or rituals. His life was a practical testimony to his teachings, full of humility, compassion and joy. Ramakrishna inspired the creation of the Ramakrishna Mission, founded by his disciple Swami Vivekananda, to spread his message of service and unity.
