Kronika modernizacji Magistrali Węglowej: Gdańsk Osowa - Rębiechowo - Pępowo Kartuskie - Żukowo
In today's episode of the aerial series 'Chronicles of the Modernization of the Coal Line,' we take a closer look at the modernized and electrified Line 201, popularly known as the 'Coal Main Line', Poland. 😉 From the air, we see the progress of extensive work at individual stations, stops, and interesting engineering structures between Gdansk Osowa and Zukowo along with the famous bridge over the Slupina River. We begin our observations of the progress over Gdansk Osowa station, where, at this beautifully situated station amidst greenery, undulating terrain, and Lake Wysockie, we have perhaps the greatest difference with what we know from the good old days: electric traction already partially hangs over the station, the omnipresent gates supporting this traction, modernized tracks, modern platforms... A sign of the arrival of a new era. Only the old building from the 1930s, typical of the 'Coal Line' reminds us of the station's old appearance. The exit towards Gdynia has also been designed in an interesting way – the main track is cut due to the construction of a viaduct, while a temporary track to maintain connections to Gdynia has been built right next to it. Observing modern railway vehicles operating services from Osowa, we 'fly' towards Rebiechowo, where, leaving the station, we can already see the existing electrified first track, with space for a second one. We arrive at the first interesting engineering structure: a viaduct over the PKM line. 😉 You can see how interesting this location will be, allowing for collision-free traffic on two lines: the 'Coal Line' track will cross the PKM line over this viaduct, while the second track will bypass the viaduct and connect to the PKM line via a switch. As you can see, the viaduct hasn't been raised yet, nor are its abutments, but it must be admitted that the freestanding structure itself is impressive – the landscape will be transformed beyond recognition. We continue flying towards the Rebiechowo stop, which, whether until recently was located where the car bypass is located – now it has been moved to the other side of the road. In there, we can see the platforms slowly being built and the lack of rail tracks. From there, we fly once more towards Osowa, seeing the modernized link (wye) with the PKM line to the Gdansk Rebiechowo stop towards the airport. We can also see 'holes' on the 'Coal Line' where viaducts, bridges, and culverts will soon be built. From Rebiechowo, we head to the Pepowo Kartuskie stop, where work is also in full swing at the stop. 😉Just like in Rebiechowo, we don't have tracks here yet; new platforms are being built from scratch, and old ones are giving way to new ones – that's what you might think when you see the fallen telecommunication poles that once lined almost every railway line in Poland... From Pepowo, we head to what is probably the most famous and distinctive spot in this part of 'Coal Line' - the bridge over the Slupina River in Zukowo. Known for the great battles for this spot during World War II, it has now been dismantled (you can see the removed spans lying by the road) and no longer serves its purpose – it must be admitted that the two freestanding brick supports here give a strange impression, like seeing something unique. After all, such a view was only seen by the line's builders in the 1930s. 😉 We fly around the bridge, performing 360s, spins, and close-ups, also seeing the empty space where the tracks once stood, all in the bright setting sun. The last aerial location visited in this film (although from there we also pass the Zukowo stop, opened in 2015) is Zukowo Wschodnie station, where the extensive work is also evident. Only the station building, practically identical to the one in Osowa, maintains the old tradition of the former 'Coal Line'. While the station's track layout is currently a mystery from this perspective, it is noticeable that the platforms themselves have been moved towards Pepowo, relative to the original ones. Near these platforms, you can see a gap where (it seems) a tunnel will be built under the tracks. Recorded in October 2025.
