Humanity at the Heart of Healthcare Seminar Series - The Unfamiliar Body

𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁-𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗭𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗲 – 𝟭𝟴 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 Guest Speaker Mr Shaik Muhammad Amin, Doctoral Researcher (Psychology Programme), School of Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), was invited by NHG Education Research to share qualitative accounts of loss and recovery in first-time stroke survivors and family caregivers, and discussed how essential addressing psycho-socio-emotional and spiritual needs alongside physical impairments within the Singaporean care ecosystem is. Stroke is a significant negative life event that completely shatters an individual's fundamental assumptions and beliefs that contribute to a sense of security, predictability, meaning, and purpose to life. The resultant fragments are experienced by survivors and family caregivers as non-death or living losses, a concept that encapsulates the feelings of grief and sadness from losses that occur as one continues living. Some of these losses are readily apparent, such as the loss of functionality. Other losses, such as the loss of hopes and dreams, may not be as visible, but certainly are as detrimental. However, the pressure of the current healthcare system to focus on the management of the various disabilities of stroke often prevents the recognition of these losses.
