At one time, the land encompassing the neighborhood was owned by the Lorillard Family, known as the Lorillard Tobacco Company. East Tremont is a neighborhood in the East Bronx, New York City. From the north and moving clockwise, it is bounded by East 180th Street, Southern Boulevard, the Cross-Bronx Expressway, and Third Avenue. East Tremont Avenue is the primary thoroughfare through the neighborhood. East Tremont is part of Bronx Community Board 6, and its ZIP Codes include 10457 and 10460. The NYPD’s 48th Precinct patrols the area. The area’s New York City Housing Authority property is patrolled by P.S.A. 8 at 2794 Randall Avenue in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx. Belmont Playground Belmont Playground is located on the southeast corner of Belmont Avenue and E. 182nd Street in the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx. The namesake of the playground, avenue, and neighborhood was the estate of the Lorillard family, who made their fortune in the tobacco business. In 1760 Pierre Lorillard opened a snuff-grinding factory in a rented house on Chatham Street in lower Manhattan. British troops killed him during the occupation of New York in the late 1770s, and his two sons, Peter and George, took over the firm in 1792. he brothers Lorillard maintained the administrative offices in Manhattan but relocated the manufacturing operations north to a grist mill on the Bronx River. By the end of the 18th century, their factory produced more chewing tobacco, snuff, and cigars than any other facility in the country. In 1870 the old wooden mill was replaced with a stone factory building (known as the Lorillard Snuff Mill), which presently serves as a restaurant in the nearby New York Botanical Garden in Bronx Park. Peter Lorillard's grave in the cemetery at St. Peter's Church, Westchester is also a landmark; his tombstone is shaped like a snuffbox. Walter Gladwin Park The park is named for Walter H. Gladwin (1902-1988), the first Black elected governmental official in the Bronx. Born in Berbice, Guyana, he moved to the Bronx to live with an uncle after he was orphaned as a teenager. He graduated from City College in 1936 and New York Law School in 1941 and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1942. In 1943, Gladwin was appointed Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue for the Third District of New York and 1946 Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of New York. In the 1940s, Gladwin held many community and civic-oriented positions, including the vice-chairmanship of the Bronx Committee of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Active in the N.A.A.C.P., he also served on the Board of Directors for the Forest Neighborhood Houses, one of the earliest and most ambitious multi-racial public housing projects in The Bronx, and was a founding member of the Bronx branch of the Urban League.
