Through four different interviews, this documentary reveals the opportunities and challenges hidden behind every string of jasmine. 🌸 Jasmine Farmer's Perspective We met a jasmine farmer supplying flowers to Sri Ayyappa Vilas Malaragam in Tirunelveli. According to him: • Jasmine cultivation is more profitable compared to crops like cotton and paddy. • He cultivates jasmine on approximately 32 cents of land. • He and his wife personally harvest the flowers, reducing labour dependency. However, one major challenge continues to threaten profitability: 🐛 Pest Management The farmer explained that pests return within one or two days after spraying pesticides. As a result: • Pesticides are sprayed around three times per week. • Input costs have increased significantly due to rising pesticide prices. • Pest control has become one of the biggest challenges in jasmine cultivation. He also expressed hope that government intervention in reducing production costs could provide relief to farmers. 💰 Commission Structure The farmer shared insights about the commission system operating within the wholesale market. For every ₹100 worth of flowers sold: • Approximately ₹13 is paid as commission. This illustrates how flower markets function through established relationships between farmers and commission vendors. 💐 The Garland Economy We also met experienced garland makers who transform flowers into products used for weddings, temples, festivals, and celebrations. One garland maker shared that: • He started making garlands at the age of 15. • He is now 51 years old. • He has nearly 35 years of experience. • His current flower shop has been operating for around 15 years. 🌿 Regional Flower Specialization Commission vendors explained how different regions are associated with specific flowers: • Jasmine is especially famous in Tirunelveli and Madurai. • Pitchi Poo is particularly renowned in Thovalai and Kerala due to its fragrance and quality. 🏗️ Systems Thinking Perspective The flower economy is not sustained by a single individual.
