Shenandoah

Shenandoah is one of the great mysteries of American folk music. Despite its popularity, nobody knows exactly where the song originated. Scholars have proposed various theories: that it began among Missouri River boatmen, among voyageurs and fur traders, as a work song on the American waterways, or even as a song connected with the Native American leader Shenandoah. Over time, history dissolved into poetry, leaving us with a melody of extraordinary beauty and a lyric full of longing, distance and farewell. For this arrangement I have imagined a fictional backstory inspired by the song’s imagery. The year is 1877. An African-American keelman in his fifties has spent most of his life working the rivers and canal systems of the Shenandoah Valley and the Potomac. Respected for his skill but unable to advance beyond a certain point, he decides to leave the only home he has known for decades and travel west to the Missouri River of his childhood. From a high overlook above Harpers Ferry he gazes one last time upon the Shenandoah. In his imagination, the gentle South Fork Shenandoah becomes the river’s “daughter”—not a literal woman, but a symbol of the valley he has grown to love. Memories carry him back to his boyhood beside the Missouri, where he first watched steamboats emerging from the mist and dreamed of a life upon the water. The montage follows his long westward journey by horse, rail and riverboat toward Kansas City, where he hopes to begin a new chapter of life among the busy wharves and packet boats of the Missouri. Whether any of this has the slightest connection to the song’s true origins is impossible to know. Like so many traditional songs, Shenandoah invites every generation to imagine its own story. This arrangement is intentionally simple: harmonica, acoustic guitar and acoustic bass. I wanted it to retain the feel of a river song carried across great distances—part folk ballad, part country lament, and above all a song about leaving one shore while searching for another.
