Raise Your Own Beef: Our FIRST 5 Mistakes!
Raising your own beef is an excellent way to put your land to work and provide food for your family. These are the first five mistakes we made in raising a beef steer. We’re sharing so you don’t have to make the same ones! 🔔 Subscribe for more from the farm! https://www.youtube.com/c/GWPHomestea... ➡️ Shop our Amazon Storefront for farm essentials and our favorite odds and ends: https://amazon.com/shop/gwphomestead We raise our own beef because it allows us to use our property to feed our family. Homegrown beef is AMAZING and by selling half of the steer it allows us to offset some of the costs of purchasing and finishing the animal. We buy a weaned calf from a local farm and raise it until it reaches its final desired weight. By taking this approach we incur the cost of purchasing the animal. If we were a full-blown ranch and kept a herd of cows and a couple of bulls obviously we wouldn’t have to buy the calves. We don’t have the space for that, and we don’t have a desire to keep a bull around either, so we buy the calves. I would say it works out to be more expensive than raising mom and dad, but this is what works for our family. This is the third summer on the farm and this was Attempt #3 at raising beef. Now that we’ve established WHY, let’s talk about WHAT we’ve done wrong and how we’ll be doing it differently in the future. 1. Feed them! 2. Make sure you are equipped to handle them (fences, property, trailer, etc) 3. Find a reputable butcher and schedule your processing date EARLY 4. Get the right breed 5. Buying one that hasn’t been handled much 6. Bonus: Once you get your system figured out, try to buy another one In the coming weeks we’ll be making another video about how much meat we got off of a half beef.
