One of Britain's Last Hand-Operated Railway Crossings
For generations, manually operated level crossings were a familiar sight across Britain’s railways — but today, very few remain. In this video, I visit Norwood Lane Level Crossing near Langwith, one of the country’s increasingly rare signalman-operated crossings, where traditional manual gates are still opened and closed by railway staff rather than automatic barriers. I explore the crossing itself, look at how it operates today, and discuss why crossings like this are slowly disappearing from the modern railway network. With over 6,000 level crossings once existing across Britain, traditional gated crossings such as Norwood Lane have become a rare surviving reminder of a very different era of railway operation. Featuring trains passing over the Robin Hood Line, the historic crossing keeper’s house, and the manually operated gates still in daily use, this is a fascinating look at a piece of railway heritage that continues to survive in the modern age. 📍 Location: Norwood Lane Level Crossing, near Langwith 🚆 Route: Robin Hood Line 📷 Filmed in Nottinghamshire / Derbyshire border region If you enjoy railway history, abandoned infrastructure, forgotten transport locations, and surviving pieces of Britain’s historic railway network, be sure to subscribe for more videos exploring the past and present of the railways. #LevelCrossing #RailwayHistory #Trains #RobinHoodLine #Railway #NorwoodLane #BritishRailways
