KAIST, 냉매 필요없는 소형 초저온 냉각장치 개발 / YTN 사이언스

A compact cooling device capable of achieving ultra-low temperatures close to absolute zero without the need for expensive refrigerants has been developed for the first time in the world. A research team led by Professor Sang-Kwon Jeong of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KAIST announced the development of a cooling device capable of achieving ultra-low temperatures in a relatively compact size without the need for expensive Helium-3 refrigerants. The developed device features a structure that integrates an adsorption chiller, which utilizes the evaporative cooling effect of liquid Helium-4, with an adiabatic demagnetization chiller that uses superconducting magnets to enable cooling without a circulation system. This structure allows for the realization of ultra-low temperatures as low as -272.85 degrees Celsius. The research team conducted dozens of continuous operation tests on the developed chiller and confirmed that it operates stably without performance degradation. Ultra-low temperature cooling is necessary to stably maintain superconducting qubits in quantum computers or space sensors that detect cosmic radiation; however, existing dilution chillers faced the problem of increasing the overall system size because they had to circulate expensive and low-density Helium-3 refrigerants.
