A Hippie’s Diary – A True Story from the Hippie Movement (Documentary)
A Hippie’s Diary is a documentary about Eva, a Swedish woman who left home in the early 1970s to follow the global counterculture movement – from a hippie festival in her hometown, to Goa in India, to the Osho community in Pune, and finally to Rajneeshpuram in Oregon. As a child, Eva is subjected to a school system that cannot recognize her restless intelligence or make room for her unruly imagination. When the first UN environmental summit comes to her hometown in 1972, the city fills with activists, protesters, and utopian energy. A temporary hippie festival appears on a field near seventeen-year-old Eva’s home, and for the first time, she feels a sense of belonging. Before long, she leaves Sweden with a group of new friends on “The Yes Bus,” traveling east through Afghanistan to India. She lives for several years on a beach in Goa, having left behind a rigid system of schooling, productivity, and social conformity. Still, she is searching for something more than escape. Drawn by the promise of shared purpose and spiritual growth, Eva joins the Osho movement in Pune (Poona) and later becomes part of its relocation to Rajneeshpuram in Oregon – an ambitious social experiment that sought to build a city from scratch, even as tensions grew with the neighbors. In the documentary we meet Eva at 70, reflecting on an education system shaped by testing and evaluation rather than creativity, and on how the hippie movement came to define her life. A Hippie’s Diary traces how alternative ways of living, learning, and community leave lasting marks — long after the movements themselves have faded.
