Philippe Meirieu : le piège caché de l’éducation moderne
In this insightful lecture, Philippe Meirieu addresses a central question in all education: what constitutes a subject in education? Is a student merely a product of their environment, their family history, their social or psychological difficulties? Or can they become a free individual, capable of making choices, surpassing themselves, and forging their own path? Through philosophical, pedagogical, and institutional reflection, Philippe Meirieu demonstrates that education can never be reduced to a simple technique, nor to an exact science. Educating is not about creating a conformist individual. It is about accompanying the emergence of a subject: a person capable of thinking, deciding, resisting their own limitations, and gradually taking responsibility for their actions. The lecture raises a fundamental tension: on the one hand, there is the illusion of believing that the child or adolescent is already completely free, responsible for everything, capable of immediately "taking charge of themselves." On the other hand, there is the opposite risk: self-pity over determinism, which transforms the young person into a perpetual victim of their environment, their past, or their difficulties. Between these two pitfalls, Philippe Meirieu proposes a demanding educational path: recognizing the constraints that weigh on each individual, without ever relinquishing the possibility of freedom. The heart of this reflection also rests on the distinction between a subject of law and a subject of fact. A subject of law is someone whom society classifies, defines, and frames through statuses, ages, responsibilities, and legal or institutional categories. But a subject of fact is a unique individual, with their own history, maturity, wounds, environment, and contradictions. Education must therefore operate within this constant tension: respecting the necessary frameworks of society while refusing to confine the individual to a definitive category. Philippe Meirieu also emphasizes the idea of the clinamen, that small, possible deviation that allows a human being to avoid remaining trapped by the trajectory their origins, environment, or history seemed to impose. The role of the educator is not to decree the freedom of the other, but to create the conditions for such a shift to become possible. Even a minimal shift can become the beginning of a genuine development of the individual. This conference will be of particular interest to teachers, educators, trainers, educational researchers, students in pedagogy, parents, and anyone who questions the mission of schools today. It explores the concepts of responsibility, freedom, determinism, authority, sanction, classification, educational support, and democracy. In a society that often treats young people as impulsive consumers rather than as individuals capable of reflection, Philippe Meirieu's presentation underscores a crucial point: education must help each person find their place, without dominating the space, and become capable of taking responsibility for their actions. 👉 If this talk helps you better understand the challenges of education, pedagogy, and schooling, please subscribe to the channel, like the video, and share your thoughts in the comments.
