W11_4: Hypothesis testing: answering questions using data

Welcome to Week 11 Lecture 4 of the course "Statistics for Data Science - II" by Prof. Andrew Thangaraj Full Course: https://study.iitm.ac.in/ds/course_pa... Video Overview In this lecture, we move beyond standard theoretical tests and focus on how to use hypothesis testing in real-world data analysis. We discuss how to formulate null and alternative hypotheses when starting with a dataset and aiming to test a specific idea. The lecture emphasizes metrics beyond significance and power, highlighting the importance of confidence in conclusions. Using examples such as testing for magical abilities, evaluating new medical treatments, identifying seasonal patterns in accidental deaths, and uncovering biases in hiring practices, we show how real problems can be posed as hypothesis tests. This motivates the need for the P-value, a key concept in hypothesis testing that will be explored in detail in upcoming lectures. About IIT Madras' online Bachelor of Science programme IIT Madras offers four-year BS programmes that aim to provide quality education to all, irrespective of age, educational background, or location. The BS programme has multiple levels, which provide flexibility to students to exit at any of these levels. Depending on the courses completed and credits earned, the learner can receive a Foundation Certificate from IITM CODE (Centre for Outreach and Digital Education), Diploma(s) from IIT Madras, or BSc/BS Degrees from IIT Madras.
