A microscopic parasite (Cyclospora cayetanensis) that causes explosive, watery diarrhea that can drag on for weeks and keep coming back. How do you catch it? From contaminated fresh produce — lettuce, herbs, berries — NOT from other people. It can't spread person to person. Does washing kill it? No. Washing, freezing, and even chlorine don't reliably kill this parasite. Only heat does — cooking to about 158°F destroys it. What are the symptoms? Watery diarrhea, cramping, bloating, nausea, deep fatigue, and weight loss, usually starting about a week after you eat the contaminated food. What's the treatment? An antibiotic called TMP-SMX (Bactrim or Septra). Standard stool tests often MISS it — so ask your doctor to test for Cyclospora by name. Who's most at risk?
