Dal cielo alla terra, Archeologia a San Galgano
San Galgano stands there, almost a prototype of a Cistercian abbey, a magnetic mark in the landscape of deepest Tuscany, in the municipality of Chiusdino, province of Siena. There's the alpha and the omega. The birth of a great project to control the territory by the monks, and yes, of course, we mustn't forget the question of faith, which often went hand in hand with worldly goods in the Middle Ages. There's this monument, which drives English tourists crazy with its idea of a romantic ruin, and tourists from around the world, for its undeniable beauty in harmony with the landscape. Then there's the archaeological research and enhancement project, strongly supported and funded by the municipality of Chiusdino itself and implemented by the Department of Historical Sciences and Cultural Heritage of the University of Siena. A project that aims to study all the phases of San Galgano, clearing away many mists of knowledge, the construction site of the structure and the life of the abbey until its decline, finally also considering the restoration phases of the last two centuries. The scientific direction is entrusted to Professor Marco Valenti and the coordination to Dr. Alessandra Nardini, of the University of Siena. By Angelo Cimarosti
