Tana Toraja, Indonesia: Amazing Traditional Architecture

Tana Toraja or "Land of the Torajas" is a cultural area located in the province of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It can be reached by taking an 8-hours bus from Makassar, or more comfortably by flying. "Toraja" itself is a Bugis word that means "people of the mountains"; before the arrival of the Dutch, the Torajans associated with their own village and had no ethnic consciousness. Today, the Torajans are world-renowned for their exquisite (and shocking!) funerary rites. The Torajans spent a lot of money to hold a funeral ceremony for noblemen, with the wealthy being buried in a stone grave on a rocky cliff; the higher the grave, the higher the status of the deceased. Some of the rituals might not be for the faint-hearted, but if you enjoy traditional houses and carvings, Toraja is not short of them. The traditional houses called tongkonan dot the landscape of Tana Toraja, with the carvings representing various meanings. While most Torajans today have converted to Christianity, they still keep their tradition alive.
