China construirá el ferrocarril del puerto de Chancay

The mega-railway project connecting the mining areas of central Peru with the port of Chancay—contracted to POWERCHINA in November 2025 for approximately US$420 million—envisages a route of approximately 120 km dedicated to the heavy transport of copper, lithium, and other minerals. Designed to reduce transit times (from approximately 18 hours to approximately 5 hours on some routes) and logistics costs, it is estimated that Peruvian mining companies could save between US$1 billion and US$1.5 billion annually, depending on volume and contracts. The railway complements the Chancay Megaport (led by COSCO and Peruvian partners), a reported investment of US$3 billion–3.5 billion with a design capacity for very large vessels (up to approximately 18,000 TEU) and an initial phase of nearly 1 million TEU/year, positioning Chancay as a competitive hub in the South Pacific. The announcements place the acceleration of the plan between 2024 and 2028, although the entry into rail service depends on permits, expropriations, and construction pace.
