These fibers are thin strands of glass or plastic that transmit light over long distances with minimal loss. The principle behind their function is TIR, which allows light to be guided through the fiber without escaping. How Optical Fibers Work Using Total Internal Reflection: Core and Cladding: An optical fiber consists of a core (a dense, transparent material like glass or plastic) surrounded by a cladding (a less dense material). The core has a higher refractive index than the cladding. Light Enters the Fiber: When light enters the core of the fiber, it strikes the boundary between the core and cladding at an angle greater than the critical angle. Because the light is traveling from a denser medium (core) to a less dense medium (cladding), it experiences total internal reflection. Multiple Total Internal Reflections: The light bounces back and forth within the core, reflecting off the boundary between the core and cladding. This keeps the light confined within the core, even as it bends or curves. Light Propagation: The light continues traveling down the length of the fiber due to repeated total internal reflections, allowing it to be transmitted over long distances with very little signal loss. Benefits of TIR in Optical Fibers: Efficient Transmission: Light travels through optical fibers with almost no loss, even over long distances, because no light escapes through the cladding. High-Speed Communication: Optical fibers are used in telecommunications to transmit data at high speeds (e.g., internet, phone, TV signals). Medical and Industrial Applications: Optical fibers are used in endoscopes for internal imaging in medical procedures and in sensors for industrial monitoring. Types of Optical Fibers: Single-mode fibers: Used for long-distance communication, where light follows a single path through the core. Multi-mode fibers: Used for shorter distances, where light can take multiple paths through the core, typically used in local area networks (LANs).
