Raksha Cham || Mask Dance || Tshechu || Raksha Gocham Raksha Gocham, also known as Raksha Cham, is one of the most iconic mask dance performed during Tshechu festivals in Bhutan. Dancers wear a Raksha mask, often representing an ox-headed deity, symbolizing the Lord of Death or the protector of the bardo (intermediate state after death). This sacred dance is deeply rooted in Vajrayana Buddhism and is believed to guide sentient beings towards liberation by reminding them of impermanence, karma, and the path to Dharma. During Raksha Gocham, dancers in elaborate silk costumes move in slow, meaningful patterns to ritual music played with drums, cymbals, and trumpets. Each movement carries symbolic meaning—purifying negative karma, clearing obstacles, and invoking blessings for peace and harmony. The dance reenacts scenes from the Bardo Thödol (Tibetan Book of the Dead), where the judgment of souls takes place, teaching the audience that virtuous actions lead to liberation while harmful actions result in suffering.
