For the first time ever, Tokushima’s Awaodori and Hiroshima’s Aki‑Takada Kagura joined forces in a stunning cultural collaboration. Awaodori is one of Japan’s quintessential summer festivals. Among the many events held across Tokushima Prefecture, Tokushima City’s Awaodori is the largest. Multiple enbujo (performance spaces) are set up across the city center, and energetic street dances draw over 1 million visitors from Japan and overseas during its five‑day run. Known for its welcoming rhythm—“if you raise your hands and move your feet, you’ll join the Awaodori”—even first‑time visitors can easily hop in and feel the excitement of the Yoshikono rhythm. Originating over 400 years ago from Bon‑dance traditions in the Tokushima castle town, Awaodori evolved under the influence of folk arts such as kumiodori, niwaka, and zomeki. Prosperous indigo and salt merchants brought cultural influences from across Japan to Tokushima, helping shape the dance into its current form. Aki‑Takada Kagura is a theatrical folk performance featuring drumming, flute, and expressive masks and costumes. In Aki‑Takada, Kagura developed into a highly dramatic art that keeps local faiths and ancestral traditions alive. Below the theatrical surface lies the essence of shinjin‑waraku—literally “divine‑human harmony”—where gods and people join in joyous celebration.
