ZFS vs. RAID - vdevs and more!
I may spend a lot of time in a Windows world, but when it comes to storing large amounts of data safely, ZFS is always my go-to filesystem. There are a lot of concepts that are similar to RAID, but really take RAID to the next level! EXTRA CREDIT: The original ZFS was developed by Sun for their Solaris systems. Parts of that became OpenSolaris, at least until Oracle bought Sun and made it closed-source. OpenSolaris eventually spun out the part that included ZFS into the OpenZFS project, which is the ZFS that runs on BSD and *nix environments today! ZFS is usually said to stand for "Zettabyte File System", but ZFS actually has the capability to store some trillions of yottabytes--an order of magnitude larger than zettabytes! A zettabyte is roughly the amount of Internet traffic sent globally during the entirety of 2016. (That's a lot of cat videos.)
