A volcanic eruption has occurred in eastern Indonesia. Mount Dukono, located in North Halmahera, North Maluku, erupted on Friday morning (May 8) at around 7:41 a.m. local time. Evacuation and rescue efforts were carried out after 20 climbers were reported missing. Three of the missing people, including two foreign nationals, have reportedly died. Mount Dukono Eruption Spews Ash 10 Km into the Air According to the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the eruption spewed volcanic ash approximately 10 kilometers into the air. A total of 20 climbers were reported missing shortly after the eruption, nine of whom were from Singapore. "Three people died: two foreigners and one local resident of Ternate Island in eastern Indonesia," said the Chief of Police for North Halmahera, North Maluku, AKBP Erlichson Pasaribu, to Kompas TV. Dozens of rescue personnel have been deployed to search for victims in the affected area, Iwan Ramdani, Head of the Ternate Search and Rescue Office, told Reuters. Mount Dukono on alert level three Since April 17, the area around the mountain has been closed to visitors due to increased volcanic activity. Mount Dukono's current alert level is at alert level, the third level in Indonesia's four-tier warning system. Authorities have also warned of potential further dangers, including volcanic ashfall that could reach residential areas in the north, and have prohibited activities within a 4-kilometer radius of the crater.
