Our “Limitations” Are Actually Superpowers | DJ Kurs | TEDxBroadway
Deaf West Theatre’s DJ Kurs says magic happens when people set aside their perceived limitations and come together with those who are different from them. Deaf West’s 2015 revival of Spring Awakening marked a lot of firsts: the first Broadway musical performed simultaneously in spoken English and sign language; the first time an actor in a wheelchair starred on Broadway; and the first Broadway credit for 23 of the show’s stars. DJ Kurs is the Artistic Director of Deaf West Theatre, a position he has served in since 2012. He shepherded the production of “Spring Awakening” from its beginnings in a 99-seat theatre in Los Angeles to its current revival on Broadway. Prior to his current position, he served as an Artistic Associate and ASL Master at Deaf West Theatre. He is also a freelance producer and filmmaker. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
