Namashivaya from Raga Laya Pravaham

NAMASHIVAYA The five sacred syllables Na Ma Shi Va Ya is portrayed in the Shiva Panchakshara Stotram composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. Sri Nelluvai Ragesh has composed the music using penta-tonic ragas or scales from the Carnatic system. It is rendered in kanta Chaappu Taalam or 5 beats cycle, and in 5 Audava ragas, or 5-note melodies namely Rasika Ranjani, Hindolam, Amrithavarshini, Shivaranjani and Revathi. In each raga the swara patterns culminate in a Pancha Jathi Theermanam of Tha Dhing Gi Na Thom. This is the pancha segment of tonight’s programme, a number associated with Lord Shiva. He is known as Panchamukha Shiva, where each of his 5 faces represent a distinct aspect of his multifaceted nature. It also represents Pancha Linga Sthalas or the 5 sacred Shiva temples, and the Pancha Bootha or the 5 elements. 5 students of Guru Neewin Hersall will bring this divine experience to life through the elegance of Bharatanatyam.
