Why is 2,000-year-old Roman concrete stronger than ours? Tiny lime chunks reseal cracks whenever water gets in. Roman harbours have sat in pounding seawater for two thousand years and grown stronger. Modern concrete built with steel reinforcement can start crumbling in fifty. For a long time that made no sense, and the answer turned out to be an accident the Romans may not have fully understood themselves. Modern concrete is brilliant at first and then loses. Water works into tiny cracks, reaches the steel bars inside, rusts them, and the rust expands and splits the structure apart. Roman concrete has no steel, and it does something modern concrete cannot: it heals. Part of the recipe is volcanic ash, which reacts over time with seawater to grow new, tough interlocking minerals, so the sea that should destroy it actually reinforces it. But the bigger clue was hiding in plain sight. Roman concrete is dotted with little white lumps called lime clasts, which researchers had long dismissed as sloppy mixing. A 2023 MIT study led by Admir Masic argued they are the secret. The Romans mixed lime in a hot, reactive way that left these lime rich specks scattered through the material. When a crack forms and water gets in, it dissolves a nearby clast, and the solution recrystallises inside the crack and seals it, an automatic repair kit built into the stone. The honest edge: exactly how much of this the Romans did on purpose versus stumbled into is still debated, but researchers are now trying to copy it to build concrete that lasts for centuries, not decades.
