My DrumSet: DW workshop series drums were made for a very short time and were discontinued back in early 2000 not last year as stated (Except for a Workshop Series snare, full kits were discontinued in 2000). They were 100% american made. The shells were all maple, Keller shells without the re-inforcement rings. They were outfitted with the oval lugs that were precursors to the PDP lugs so the buying public could differentiate them from their custom series drums. All the other hardware on the shells (Snare Strainer, Bass Drum Spurs, Tom Suspension Mounts, etc) were 100% DW and it was labeled as such. They only offerered these drums in very specific sizes (Fast Tom Sizes) and colors. It was DW's attempt to capture new buyers with a solid, mid-level, mass-produced (Machine made) kit for substantially less than their hand laid veneered custom series. They were produced in the company's Newbury Park,CA. facility (DW now operates from Oxnard,CA.). After the introduction of the Workshop Series, DW noticed that the series, though factored to be a mid-level entry was costing almost as much to produce as their custom series and sales of the "Workshops" were starting to eat in to their "Custom" series market, so DW scrubbed the manufacturing of the Workshops (They were that good). They were then resurrected as the now known PDP series but were offered at first as an entry level kit with cheaper shells of lesser grade woods and materials and manufactured initially in Taiwan to keep costs down. Later, to get a better handle on quality control and import tariffs they decided to move the manufacturing to Ensenada, Mexico. There the PDP line started to grow in terms of model lines and levels amongst the series, while still being able to maintain their market share of their so called "hand-made" custom drums, the "Collectors" series.
