The Netherlands, literally the low-lying land, has been flood prone for most of its history. Over the years work has been done to reduce the chances of a catastrophic flood. However, even into the mid-1900's Zeeland was still vulnerable. After a catastrophic flood in January of 1953, the Dutch finally came up with a solution: the Delta Works.
