Common Sense Catholic Sexuality.
Fr. Jeff Langan is back to talk about Catholic Sexual Ethics. The role of chastity/ holy purity putting emphasis on the positive affirmation of what is good. Its not the most important, but very hard to advance without it. At the end of the day the goal is to harmonize our desires with True Love United to Love itself, that is, with He who is the creator of love. This is not new. Saint Augustine expressed it in His confessions when he stated that our hearts are restless until they rest in God. We have desires that point to a good. The difficulty is how to direct those desires to their proper end, experience the emotions in harmony with them , and at the right place and time. Since the Renaissance, we see a renewed appreciation of human nature, but with that comes danger of excessively “realistic” presentation of fallen human nature, the glorification of fallen human nature. Renaissance sees first attempts to mass produce pornography, and the return to pagan views of sex and marriage. This all picks up steam with Rousseau, the man with all natural experiences, learn natural desires, and produces some good developments, and then Marquis de Sade. With the French Revolution we see some of the first legal efforts to bring about the return to whats primitive, legalisation of divorce. Mary Wollstonecraft to Mary Shelly. Frankenstein. The next stage, Wagner & Nietzsche. Tristan and Isolde to Parsifal. Then, Freud. Wilhelm Reich. Alfred Kinsey. Here it all gets advanced under the cover of science. Birth control, abortion, divorce.
