It appears in various places, and then comes to rest on the Tikhvinka River. People begin building a chapel, but in the morning, neither the icon nor the frame are found. Everything miraculously appears on the other bank. There, the icon hangs in the air near the eastern wall. Thus, the Mother of God Herself chooses the place for her stay. When Novgorod merchants told the Patriarch of Constantinople about this, he wept. He realized it was the very same relic that had disappeared from the Blachernae Church. "It has abandoned us because of our pride and injustice," the Patriarch said. During the Time of Troubles, the Swedes attempted to destroy the Tikhvin Monastery three times. Sixteen-year-old Ekaterina, an orphan who had suffered severe seizures and paralysis for many years, was brought to St. Isaac's Cathedral at her request to see the Tikhvin Icon. During a prayer service, she felt as if someone had doused her with cold water from head to toe. Then, she regained her strength, took her first step, approached the icon herself, and left the cathedral completely healthy. Doctors recorded this healing in detail. After the Revolution, the relic ended up in a museum, then passed through Pskov, Riga, Germany, and finally to the United States. Before her death, the icon's custodian bequeathed it to Russia only after the fall of the godless regime and the restoration of the Tikhvin Monastery. In 2004, the icon returned home. Today, people pray before the Tikhvin Icon for families, children, health, and help in the most difficult circumstances. But it's important to remember the most important thing: it's not a board or paint that saves. It's the Lord who saves through the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos.
