The first mention of Nerekhta refers to 1214 , when the children of Vsevolod III (Big Nest), the Grand Duke Vladimir since 1176 fought over the settlement. Nerekhta is also mentioned in 1362 in the life of Pakhomiya , who founded a monastery 3 versts from the city (abolished in 1764 and converted to a parish church). In 1406 the Grand Duke Vasily I Dmitrievich gave the settlement to his sister Sophia Vitovtovna; at this time salt deposits had been found nearby and were a great trading commodity. The Old Russian part of Nerekhta was traditionally located on the right bank of the Nerekhta River (the tributary of the Solonitsa River). The development of the left bank only began in the 16th century... In 1462 the Grand Duke Vasily the Dark gave Nerekhta and the salt works to his wife Maria Yaroslavna . Around 1609 Nerekhta was burnt and devastated. According to an inventory of 1627, the dwellings were still half empty and the salt works abandoned.From this time to 1778, Nerekhta was under the administration of the Kostroma before finally becoming a county town.......
