Daryl’s Story | ALPHAS OUT LOUD

Watch Daryl’s story. Daryl is a patient with alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency. Alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency is also known as AAT deficiency, alpha-1, or genetic COPD. Daryl was an ultra-distance cyclist at the peak of his performance when he started experiencing shortness of breath during training rides. He didn’t know it then, but he was beginning to feel the effects of alpha-1. Daryl was determined to find answers to his breathing problems in hopes of continuing to cycle. After 4 years, 6 doctors, and being misdiagnosed with asthma, Daryl was diagnosed with alpha-1. The more he learned about his genetic condition, the better he understood that it could impact those close to him. Alpha-1 may have kept Daryl from competition, but it couldn’t stop his competitive spirit. Daryl took his alpha-1 diagnosis and turned it into a new passion—educating family members and others who might have alpha-1 and advocating for them to get screened. Free alpha-1 test kits are available for healthcare providers (HCPs) to screen their patients with COPD or treatment-resistant asthma for alpha-1.
