Assassins Creed (2007): Deep Dive

**Quick disclaimer: I have a speech impediment, and some words can be difficult for me to pronounce. I may occasionally substitute words, rephrase sentences, or avoid certain words altogether. I appreciate your understanding, and I hope it doesn't distract from the message and conversations in my videos.** It's kind of hard to believe that it's been almost 20 years since Assassin's Creed first came out. For a lot of us, this was the game that started it all. Before Ezio, before Black Flag, before Origins, before Assassin's Creed became one of the biggest franchises in gaming, there was Altaïr. This series isn't a review and it isn't me trying to tell you whether Assassin's Creed is a masterpiece or whether it's aged badly. There are already hundreds of videos doing that. Instead, I wanted to do something a little different. I just want to go back and experience it again. Think of this as a nostalgic Let's Play mixed with a deep dive. We'll play through the entire game together, talk about the missions, the story, the characters, and all the little things that made Assassin's Creed feel so special back in 2007. Sometimes I'll stop to explain why something mattered at the time, sometimes I'll share stories from when I first played it, and other times we'll just enjoy the game for what it is. More than anything, I want this series to feel like a conversation. Like we're both sitting on the couch replaying a game we haven't touched in years, talking about what we remember, what surprised us, and what still holds up today. If you played Assassin's Creed back when it launched, I'd love to hear your memories in the comments. If this is your first time experiencing it, I'd love to hear what you think as we go. The original Assassin's Creed was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft in 2007. Led by creative director Patrice Désilets, the team wanted to make something that felt completely different from everything else at the time. Instead of another action game, they built a world around social stealth, parkour, historical cities, and carefully planned assassinations. Climbing across rooftops and disappearing into crowds was something most of us had never seen before, and it immediately made Assassin's Creed stand out. When it released, critics and players were impressed by just how ambitious it was. The recreation of the Holy Land looked incredible, the movement system felt fresh, and the idea of reliving someone's memories through the Animus was unlike anything else on the market. That said, people also had their complaints. The investigations before each assassination could get repetitive, the combat became pretty easy once you figured out counterattacks, and there wasn't a huge variety of things to do outside the main missions. Those criticisms have followed the game ever since. But it's funny how opinions change over time. These days you'll find plenty of people who actually miss how focused the original game was. Compared to the massive open worlds we have now, Assassin's Creed feels smaller, slower, and much more deliberate. It spends time building its atmosphere instead of filling the map with icons, and the investigations make you feel like you're actually hunting your target instead of simply following a quest marker. That's one of the reasons I wanted to revisit it. I honestly don't know how I'll feel by the time the credits roll. Maybe I'll come away thinking it holds up better than I remembered. Maybe I'll understand why some people struggle to go back to it. Either way, I think it'll be fun to find out together. So if you're looking for a relaxed playthrough that takes its time, talks about the history behind the game, points out details you might have forgotten, and isn't afraid to appreciate the good while also talking about the bad, I hope you'll come along for the ride. Grab a drink, get comfortable, and let's go back to 2007 to see where Assassin's Creed began.
