Portsmouth Naval Medical Center: Anniversary Observance Historic Portsmouth, Virginia is home to the U.S. Navy’s oldest continuously-operating hospital . . . the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP). Formerly known as the Navy Hospital Portsmouth, the medical facility has been in operation since 1830. However, a part of the facility, has been around even longer. In 2017, the NMCP celebrated the anniversary of its first building . . . affectionately called Building One. Building One’s history dates back to the 1700s.
