The True Story of Tom Dula — The Man Behind “Tom Dooley”

Now here is a song my daddy used to sing and I had no idea what it was about. I decided to do some research on it and get to the bottom of it. This is not too far from where I grew up. In 1868, a 22-year-old Confederate veteran was hanged for murder in North Carolina. His name was Tom Dula. Most people know the name “Tom Dooley” from the famous Kingston Trio song — but the real story behind the ballad is darker, more complicated, and still debated nearly 160 years later. Who was Tom Dula? Was he truly guilty of killing Laura Foster? Or did he take the blame to protect someone else? In this episode of Holler Tales, we travel back to post–Civil War Wilkes County, North Carolina — into a world of mountain poverty, war trauma, jealousy, disease, and a love triangle that ended on the gallows. This is not the folk song version. This is the real story. From the shallow grave on a hillside… to the courtroom battles led by former North Carolina governor Zebulon Vance… to the execution that inspired one of America’s most famous murder ballads… The legend of “Tom Dooley” began with a young man named Tom Dula — hanged at 22 and forever frozen between guilt and doubt. If you enjoy Appalachian history, true crime, and the stories that shaped the American South, subscribe to Holler Tales for more forgotten stories from the hills. #TomDula #TomDooley #TrueCrimeHistory #AppalachianHistory #HollerTales #WilkesCounty #MurderBallad #CivilWarEra Hi, I’m Kristi… and this channel is deeply personal. My entire family is from Appalachia, and Holler Tales is where I bring those stories to life—stories never written down, never taught in school, and slowly being forgotten. My grandparents and parents have passed on, so it’s up to me, my memory, and my remaining family to help pass these stories down to my children and future generations. This channel is dedicated to real Appalachian history, true stories, and the kind of tales passed down on front porches, in kitchens, and through generations. True documentaries and some come directly from my own family. Every video is written, voiced, and created by me, with the goal of preserving a culture and history that deserves to be remembered. #Appalachia #TrueStories #AmericanHistory #Storytelling #HollerTales ✨Help support my channel, please consider: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/KristiMi... ✨ Subscribe:    / @hollertales
