Was Ein Landvermesser 1756 Im Trockengelegten Moor Fand — Und Warum Niemand Es Erklären Konnte
Earthquakes don't drain swamps—but in the autumn of 1756, when the strongest earthquake the Rhineland had ever experienced shook the Lower Rhine, a fissure opened beneath a bog, and the swamp water drained away. Surveyor Josef Reinartz stepped out over the new mud to remark a boundary that had been shifted by the quake. What emerged from the drying mud wasn't a sunken mill: a wall of hewn stone with a doorway almost 3.3 meters high—and its proportions weren't designed for a human body. A tall doorway in the old Lower Rhine region was a good 2 meters high. This one measured 3.3—and it wasn't just one, but a whole series, a corridor of equally high openings. Between them were steps, their rise almost twice the normal height, cut for a leg far longer than a person's. Reinartz had to pull himself up where the builder would have simply walked. A door can be built high for decoration—but nobody cuts a staircase their own legs can't climb. The mud tracks showed that the water had risen over an existing structure: the wall is older than the bog.
