A large fire broke out on the evening of Monday, April 7, in Paris's 17th arrondissement, affecting the Syctom selective waste sorting center located on Boulevard de Douaumont, near the Paris judicial court and the ring road, between Porte d’Asnières and Porte de Clichy. A thick plume of smoke quickly rose into the sky, visible from several neighborhoods in the capital and even from the suburbs. Paris firefighters urged the public to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to operate, also warning nearby residents to stay cautious. According to initial information from Syctom, the burning site is a facility where yellow recycling bins—containing paper, plastic, and cardboard—are sorted. These highly flammable materials may explain how rapidly the fire spread. Syctom noted that around a hundred fires occur each year in its five sorting centers, often caused by lithium batteries or batteries improperly discarded in recycling waste. The mayor of the 17th arrondissement, Geoffroy Boulard, confirmed the incident on social media. As of now, no injuries have been reported. Firefighters remain on site in large numbers to contain the blaze, the exact cause of which is still unknown.
