[Race Introduction] This race forms part of the second half of the year's middle-distance route for older horses, leading to the JBC Classic JpnI, Champions Cup GI, and Tokyo Daishoten GI. Past winners include Makoto Sparviero (JRA) in 2009, who finished a close second to Vermilion, the then-strongest dirt horse, in the JBC Classic JpnI that same year. In 2023, Wilson Tesoro (JRA) performed admirably, finishing second in both the Champions Cup and the Tokyo Daishoten, both Grade I races. Morioka is a course with significant elevation changes for a regional racecourse, and the 2000m race has two uphill sections on the straight, making it a tough stage. (Hayato Kurita) [History] From the first to the third running in 1997, the race was held at Mizusawa. From 2000, the venue moved to Morioka, and in 2015, Eurobeat (Ohi) became the second regional horse to win, and jockey Hiroto Yoshihara achieved his first dirt grade victory. Mitsuba (JRA), who won consecutively in 2017 and 2018, achieved a father-son victory with Kanehikiri (JRA) in 2010. The subtitle "Meisei Opera Memorial" was given after the second running, won by a famous horse born and raised in Iwate Prefecture, who was the overwhelming favorite with odds of 1.1 to 1.
