ENNISCRONE, one of Ireland's STUNNING west coast beaches. Check it out in the evening light.

It’s so great to get to the beach. Even if it’s not summer, and even if it's the evening time and the light’s fading. But, there are some places where the weather and the time of day are less important than the intrinsic beauty of the place itself. Maybe even the place is enhanced through visiting it when you wouldn’t normally This is Enniscrone beach in County Sligo. In fact it’s almost County Mayo! One of Mayo’s major towns, Ballina, is just a few miles down the road. A lot of work goes into these videos as you can well see! You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers. https://www.buymeacoffee.com/nakedire... Now there’s some controversy around the spelling of the name. The majority of local people know it a Enniscrone with an E, as I’ve spelled it in this video. Though apparantly some historians and local schoolteachers use Inishcrone with an I rather than an E. Local roadsigns also spell it with an I. But, perhaps none of this matters. What matters is the long stretch of soft sandy beach, the incredible sky above it, and the waves gently lapping at the shore. It’s no wonder people have lived here for a long time. The area has evidence of ancient settlements – ring forts, and the ruins of a fortified house known as Inishcrone Castle. That’s Killala Bay out there and of course the Atlantic Ocean. So peaceful, and yet as everywhere in Ireland, this place has had it’s moments in history. There was a coastguard station here from the early part of the 19th Century, but it was destroyed by the IRA in 1920 during the War of Independence with Britain. A garrison of Royal Marines were forced to surrender. Nowhere in Ireland, no matter how stunning a coastline, no matter how picturesque a town or village, has been immune from the torment of war, persecution or famine. Ireland is what Yeats called A Terrible Beauty. There may not be coastguards here anymore, but there are lifeguards, in the summer at least. There’s also a whole host of other amenities, including a Golf Course, Camp Site, Aqua Park and of course the usual Irish compliment of pubs in the town. It’s a beautiful stretch of Irish coastline, but if you come here remember it’s a Special area of Conservation. So go into the local pubs and party by all means – but don’t mess with our Sand dunes! One last look now at this majestic scene. It doesn’t get better than this. Or maybe it does – you’ll have to tune in to the next Naked Ireland video to find out. See you next time.
