Ezio Venturino (Torino, Italy): Mathematical models for fighting alien species invasions in Italy
North West Seminar Series of Mathematical Biology and Data Science Wednesday, 23rd September 2020 (hosted by Ivo Siekmann) https://www.cms.livjm.ac.uk/APMSeminar/ Presentation slides: https://www.cms.livjm.ac.uk/APMSemina... Abstract: We will review a few recently proposed dynamical systems simulating alloctonous species invasions, with special focus on the Italian situation. Mainly, we focus our attention on the American grey squirrels, that are replacing the autoctonous red squirrels, and the European hare, which is driving the native mountain hare to extinction. These invasions are or could well be coupled with pathogen agents to which the invaders are resistant or even healthy carriers, but which cause fatal infections for the indigenous species. In the last part we extend some of these ideas to illustrate some revisions of predator-prey models. The proposed changes are based on the concept of herd behavior. We will illustrate some novel features, that distinguish them from the classical ones.
