Ancient DNA Just Confirmed The Picts Were Never Celtic — Their DNA Still Lives In Modern Scots
Ancient DNA Just Confirmed The Picts Were Never Celtic — Their DNA Still Lives In Modern Scots Carved into stone across the high moors and coastlines of northern Scotland there are monolithic symbols that nobody has ever deciphered. They have been standing in the wind for over a thousand years, left by a people who dominated the north of Britain for centuries and then vanished so completely that medieval chroniclers declared their language extinct. The Picts were treated by textbooks as a Celtic people foreign in origin, the painted ones beyond Hadrian's Wall, powerful and mysterious and ultimately replaced by Gaelic-speaking Scots arriving from Ireland. That story had held its shape for fifteen hundred years. Then ancient DNA was extracted from Pictish burials and almost every part of it fell apart simultaneously. They were not Celtic migrants. The Scythian origin legend that Bede recorded and scholars repeated for centuries turned out to be exactly that, a legend. What the genetics revealed about where the Picts actually came from is considerably older and considerably stranger than the foreign origin story, and the part of this video that I think genuinely surprised me is the second finding. The Picts did not vanish. Medieval chroniclers were wrong about the extinction and the DNA proves it in a way that is hard to argue with, because their genetic signature is still present in the modern Scottish population and the data shows exactly where it is concentrated and why it survived.
