Beyond Neptune, the Solar System Never Ends — It Just Gets Quieter | Science For Sleep
Right now, five human-made machines are drifting beyond Neptune — and not one of them has reached the edge of the solar system. Not even close. In tonight's story, we travel past Pluto, through the Kuiper Belt, across the heliopause where Voyager 1 crossed into interstellar space on August 25, 2012 — and then far beyond, into the Oort Cloud: a halo of perhaps a trillion icy objects extending 1.5 light-years from the Sun that we have never directly observed and may never visit. Along the way, we meet Sedna, a world on an orbit that shouldn't exist by any model we have. We look at what New Horizons found at 43 astronomical units — and why a small, smooth contact binary named Arrokoth changed how planetary scientists think planets form. We ask whether a planet five to ten times the mass of Earth is hiding at 400 to 800 astronomical units, and what the Vera Rubin Observatory's ongoing sky survey may tell us in the next few years. And we follow the Milky Way's own gravity as it slowly stirs the solar system's outermost objects over millions of years, sending ancient ice on journeys that end, briefly, as comets in our sky. Science for Sleep is bedtime science storytelling for adults — full-length, deeply researched, written to guide you gently toward sleep while giving you something real to think about. Tonight's story runs approximately 120 minutes. Two rest points are embedded at 0:44 and 1:31 — the audio will soften and slow when you get there. If you fall asleep before the Oort Cloud, you're doing exactly what this is for. 🔔 Subscribe for weekly bedtime science stories. #sciencestories #bedtimesciencestories #sleepyscience #fallasleeptoscience #sciencefactsforsleep #sleepysciencestories ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 💭 What science mystery, space story, or fascinating discovery would you like us to explore next?
