Ecological Succession | Primary & Secondary
Ecological succession is how the makeup of a community changes over time, starting right after a disturbance. We can tend to think of succession as taking a really long time, and some types DO take a really long time, but sometimes it may only take a season or two. The most important thing to learn is that succession is all about CHANGE! SCIENCE STANDARDS: NGSS MS-LS2-4 Construct an argument supported by empirical evidence that changes to physical or biological components of an ecosystem affect populations. Emphasis is on recognizing patterns in data and making warranted inferences about changes in populations, and on evaluating empirical evidence supporting arguments about changes to ecosystems. HS-LS2-6 Evaluate claims, evidence, and reasoning that the complex interactions in ecosystems maintain relatively consistent numbers and types of organisms in stable conditions, but changing conditions may result in a new ecosystem. Examples of changes in ecosystem conditions could include modest biological or physical changes, such as moderate hunting or a seasonal flood; and, extreme changes, such as volcanic eruption or sea level rise. TEKS SCIENCE.8.12.B Organisms and environments. The student understands stability and change in populations and ecosystems. The student is expected to: describe how primary and secondary ecological succession affect populations and species diversity after ecosystems are disrupted by natural events or human activity #ecologicalsuccession #succession #biodiversity #environment #ngss #science #teks
